Edurne Herrán: Futuro Perfecto

One of the driving forces of this project was the reactions of people to the artist’s personal appearance. Based on dissociative identity disorder - formerly known as multiple personality disorder – Edurne Herrán created several identities parallel to her own and put them into practice in real life by transforming her appearance and her personality before society. Depending on the day, she played different roles and introduced herself as Edurne, Miren, Edelweiss, Inge-Liva, Alicia, Ludovika, Cayetana, Nieves, Elvira, Rosi or even Andoni. All of them were characters with radically different hairstyles, clothing, and attitudes that drew their own particular responses from those who interacted with the artist. Each one of these fictional personalities was actually facets of Herrán herself, in a sense, her alter-egos.

The project pondered the malleability of the future: the circumstantial facts that condition it and the conscious decisions that play a crucial role in its shaping. For three years, Herrán recorded her life by means of several processes that she calls experiments. She went in character to have her future told with tarot cards, palmistry, and clairvoyance. Despite being the same person, the readings were different depending on her appearance. She sent the CVs of the twins Miren and Edurne to the same employment offer in order to assess who has the greater chance of getting the job.

The authenticity of this existential project is questionable if taken as an exercise of the veracity of the information provided. However, it is Herrán´s most genuine work up to date when considered for its essence. Philosopher Charles S. Peirce said that the identity of a man consists of the coherency between what he is and what he thinks. People think much more than they express to the world at large in order to reinforce the image that they have created of themselves. However, is it not true that they would sometimes like to behave, dress or express themselves differently? It would be ideal to give free rein to every thought and to turn them into a new personality depending on the day even if the attempt would lead to total chaos. Herran jumped into the deep end experimenting with this in order to explore the construction of the individual and to prove the influence of others' perspectives on self-awareness. The consequences of developing such disparate characters could border on madness, but might it not bring people closer to true coherence? Ask Edurne.

Uno de los motores de arranque de este proyecto fueron las reacciones de la gente ante la apariencia personal de la artista. Partiendo del trastorno de identidad disociativo – o trastorno de personalidad múltiple –, en este happening, Edurne Herrán confecciona varias identidades paralelas a la suya propia y las pone en práctica de manera real transformando su estética y su carácter de cara a la sociedad. Así, dependiendo del día, juega con diversos códigos y se presenta como Edurne, Miren, Edelweiss, Inge-Liva, Alicia, Ludovika, Cayetana, Nieves, Elvira, Rosi o incluso Andoni: personajes con peinados, indumentaria y actitudes radicalmente diferentes que desencadenan respuestas diversas en los demás. Cada una de estas personalidades ficticias son en realidad prolongaciones de facetas contenidas en Edurne Herrán y acentuadas para la creación de versiones de su yo.

La autora se pregunta por la maleabilidad del futuro: los hechos circunstanciales que lo condicionan, pero también, las decisiones conscientes que juegan un papel crucial en su determinación. Durante tres años, la artista registra su vida mediante varios procesos a los que llama experimentos: desde octubre del 2014, acude con sus personalidades variopintas a que le lean el futuro (por medio del tarot, quiromancia y videncia) para demostrar que la lectura es diferente según su aspecto a pesar de ser la misma persona; envía currículos como dos de sus personajes (Miren y Edurne, hermanas gemelas) a la misma oferta de trabajo con el fin de valorar quién tiene más posibilidades laborales.

La autenticidad de este proyecto existencial es cuestionable si se entiende como un ejercicio de veracidad en las informaciones proporcionadas, sin embargo, esta obra podría considerase como la más auténtica que ha realizado la artista hasta el momento si atendemos a la esencia que se desprende de ella. Decía el filósofo Charles S.Peirce que la identidad de un hombre consiste en la coherencia entre lo que es y lo que piensa. Normalmente pensamos muchas más cosas de las que expresamos de cara al exterior porque intentamos reforzar la imagen que hemos creado de nosotros mismos. Sin embargo, ¿no es cierto que a veces nos gustaría comportarnos, vestirnos o manifestarnos de una manera distinta? Sería ideal poder dar rienda suelta a cada uno de nuestros pensamientos y convertirlos en una personalidad nueva según el día, pero es probable que el intento desembocara en un caos total. La artista se ha lanzado a la piscina experimentando semejante cometido para ahondar en la construcción del individuo y demostrar la influencia de la mirada del otro en el autorretrato. Las consecuencias de desarrollar tal polifacetismo podrían rozar la locura, pero ¿acaso no nos aproximarían a la verdadera coherencia? Pregúnteselo a Edurne.

Das Projekt lebt von den Reaktionen der Menschen auf das Erscheinungsbild der Künstlerin. In dieser Arbeit vollzieht Edurne Herrán eine Trennung der Identitäten und erschafft so neue multiple und voneinander unabhängige Persönlichkeiten, welche sie ihrer eigenen hinzufügt. Diese Charaktere lässt sie dann in der Wirklichkeit interagieren, indem sie mit ihren Vorstellungen von Ästhetik und Sein, der Gesellschaft einen Spiegel vorhalten. Somit spielt sie abhängig von ihrer Tagesform, mit verschiedenen Codes und präsentiert sich als Edurne, Miren, Edelweiß, Inge-Liva, Alicia, Elvira, Rosi oder auch Andoni. Diese Persönlichkeiten mit unterschiedlichen Frisuren, Make-Ups, Kleidung, Styles und radikal verschiedenen Lebenseinstellungen, provozieren jede für sich völlig verschiedene Reaktionen auf ihr Gegenüber. Jede dieser verschiedenen Personen spiegelt in Wahrheit eine der vielen Facetten des Charakters der Künstlerin wieder und fokussiert die Kreation auf die verschiedenen Versionen ihrer selbst.

Edurne Herrán stellt sich die Frage nach der Beeinflussbarkeit der Zukunft und nach den Begebenheiten und Umständen die sie begünstigen. Über drei Jahre hinweg haben die elf Alter Egos sich die Zukunft voraussagen lassen, durch Tarot, Handlesen und Hellseherei, mit dem Resultat, dass die Ergebnisse des Vorhergesehenen je nach Aussehen und Charakter unterschiedlich ausfielen, obwohl es sich im Grunde genommen immer um den gleichen Menschen handelte. Die Künstlerin zeichnete die Gespräche mit einer im Stift versteckten Kamera oder einer Handy Kamera auf, um sie später zu protokollieren. Abhängig von ihrem äußeren Erscheinungsbild, fallen die Interpretationen dabei sehr unterschiedlich aus, obwohl es sich, wie schon erwähnt, immer um die gleiche Person handelt.

Des Weiteren schickten die Zwillingsschwestern Edurne und Miren Bewerbungen auf das selbe Jobangebot, mit dem Ziel herauszufinden, welche der beiden die größere Aussicht auf die Arbeitsstelle hat. Beide Zwillinge waren zuvor auch bei ein und der selben Person zum Handlesen und die Ergebnisse waren extrem gegensätzlich. Im letzten Experiment haben sich die elf Protagonistinnen falsche Profile in Flirtapps angelegt, um festzustellen wieviel Bestätigung und Likes welcher Charakter bekommt.
