The central panel of Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, painted circa 1500, has been emptied of its characters to be replaced by contemporary emojis. The setting of this Renaissance work, filled with symbolism, lust, humor, and satire, has thus been converted by Edurne Herrán into a space of celebration. The panel now features the signs of today’s communication system, a device that has resulted in unexpected social structures, hybrid, physical and virtual communities that are much more flexible and can convey ideas and organize and empower shared experiences with a surprisingly effective capacity to respond, dialogue and check inherited social norms and previously thought entrenched power structures.

El panel central del jardín de las delicias del Bosco, pintado hacia el 1500, ha sido vaciado por Edurne Herrán de sus personajes para ser sustituidos por emojis contemporáneos. Esta escena de la obra renacentista, cargada de lujuria, simbología, humor y sátira, es convertida por la artista en un espacio de celebración. En ella han tomado protagonismo los signos de los actuales sistemas de comunicación, herramientas que han dado lugar a nuevas estructuras sociales, comunidades híbridas, físicas y virtuales mucho más flexibles, con la capacidad de trasmitir ideas, organizar y empoderar experiencias en común con potencial de contestación, interlocución y freno a normas sociales heredadas o anquilosadas estructuras de poder.

Für mein Werk nutze ich die Mitteltafel von Bosch's „Garten der Lüste“ (Englisch: „The Garden of Earthly Delights“), gemalt circa im Jahre 1500. Die Figuren sind aus dem Gemälde entfernt und durch kontemporäre Emojis ersetzt worden. Die Szenerie dieses Renaissance Werkes, voller Symbolismus, Lust, Humor und Satire, ist dadurch von mir in einen Raum des Feierns verwandelt worden. Die Tafel zeigt nun die Zeichen des heutigen Kommunikationssystems, ein Werkzeug, dass unerwartete soziale Strukturen hervorgebracht hat, hybride physische und virtuelle Gemeinschaften, von extremer Flexibilität, die Ideen vermitteln und geteilte Erfahrungen ermöglichen und organisieren können, die eine erstaunlich effektive Fähigkeit haben, zu antworten, zu diskutieren und althergebrachte soziale Normen und vorher als fest verwurzelt wahrgenommene Machtstrukturen in ihre Schranken zu verweisen.
